Most women in any kind of crisis are less likely than at other times to
read directions.  That a mother has not read directions before placing a
pump to her breast (even a good one) is no surprise to me at all. This is
one reason I am very careful about making sure the mother understands the
PRINCIPLES behind pumping in making it as close to the baby's action as
possible.  Obviously, a ababy does not SSSSSSSUUUCCCCCKKKKKKKK for an hour
without stopping!  Everytime the baby swallows, pressure is reduced and
then reapplied.  The pump should be used in the same way; releasing
pressure every second or so.  This mother should not be blamed for not
reading the directions, but helped to heal and then asked if she wants to
resume breastfeeding (AFTER being told her baby will not do what she made
the pump do).
