I think all of us who do lactation work have little "tricks" that work. They are
usually not evidence based but just have been learned and passed from nurse
to nurse.

This is the art part of the "art and science" of nursing. Sometimes, we have to
be cowboys and step outside of the comfort zone to help a mom get
breastfeeding off to a good start (or fix something that has been broken by
the hospital routines, staff, docs, etc).

I really hope that all of this new information on breastfeeding that has been
added to the AAP website will give pediatricians everywhere the push they
need to jump on the bandwagon a bit and support breastfeeding and mothers
a bit better.

I know there are several MD's on this list who might be of assistance and have
some advice for those of us LC's working in the hospital setting. How can we
encourage the pediatricians we work with to "come over to our side" a bit and
work with us for the benefit of the mothers and babies?

Those of us in the hospital setting obviously have to deal with other issues
that are more out of the realm of normal. Even those of us at level 1 facilities
that usually see relatively healthy babies occasionally encounter a baby who
is "sick." I personally have one of those right now. I have found it very
frustrating that while the problem is being treated very successfully, the
breastfeeding management (or lack thereof in this case) has created a whole
other set of problems that will become mine in the community after this
mother and baby are discharged. I just feel sad that we (as a group) did not
do a better job inhouse. It saddens me to see this mother's experience
undermined in so many ways.
