FYI:
Maternal factors associated with increased bilirubin
diabetes, hypertension, oral contraceptive use at time of conception, first
trimester bleeding, decreased plasma zinc level.

Drugs administered to mom-valium, oxytocin, epidural.

Labor & delivery factors:
PROM
forceps delivery, vacuum extraction, breech delivery, all R/T bruising

Infant factors:
low birthweight, prematurity, male, infection, increased weight loss after
birth, delayed cord clamping, low serum zinc & magnesium, breastfeeding,
caloric deprivation, decreased fluid intake, delayed meconium passage (we
all know what to do about the last few!)

Race: Oriental, American Indian, Greek

Factors associated with decreased bilirubin:
Black race, maternal smoking[!], drugs given to the mother-phenobarbital,
meperidine, reserpine, aspirin, chloral hydrate, heroin, phenytoin,
antipyrine, alcohol.

No association with increased bilirubin:
parity, beta-adrenergic drugs given to mother, fetal distress, low apgar
scores.

These were gleaned from lots of reading of studies on bilirubin.

So you really don't want to be a puny, early, baby boy, whose diabetic,
nervous mom has an epidural, necessitating use of forceps! - unless she
