Dear Cindi,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I was out of town at an LLL Area
conference, and now I'm trying to get caught up on e-mails.
Have you asked this mom if she is using birth control pills?
Sometimes, they have an immediate effect on supply or taste (baby makes faces and
backs off as soon as the milk lets down, rather than acting unsatisfied at the end
of the feeding). But I have also frequently seen mothers who have been
taking it for 2-3 months who have developed supply problems. Thorough history
taking does not reveal any other possible explanation. When they follow through
on my suggestion that they stop using the birth control pill, mothers who have
been on it for this long seem to need 2-3 weeks for the chemicals to clear
their body and the supply increase again. Although I have seen this situation
rather often, I really don't have a good explanation. I suspect that possibly
the higher prolactin levels in the early weeks overcame the potential effects
of the progesterone in some women, but as the prolactin level drops, then the
progesterone effects on supply become more noticeable. But this is just
conjecture on my part.
