<<An LC that I respect very much once told me that you can start cutting off
the tip portion of the nipple shield gradually untill the baby gets used
to having the nipple in his mouth instead of the nipple shield.
I have never tried it. I'd love the hear the opinions of others on this
matter.>>

I've seen that written up in older lactation texts, but I can't imagine the
cut edges of a nipple shield in a baby's mouth, nor can I imagine what it
would do to the mom's nipple once it was cut far enough down that the baby would
feel the nipple in his mouth. OUCH!

That said, I recommend nursing for a few minutes w/ the shield then taking
the shield off and putting the baby back on. And I tell moms that it seems to
take just about as long to get the baby off the shield as he was on it. But
that varies from mom to mom and baby to baby. Partially I tell her that so
she doesn't panic if he doesn't transition to the breast in 2 or three feeds.
