Jaye, this sounds remarkably like an infant with whom I worked who 
ended up diagnosed with a genetic mitochondrial disorder.  Very 
rare...not even a syndrome name.  I would be concerned at this stage 
that getting so focused on the traumatic birth leads to missing that 
there is something else happening that is completely unrelated. The 
diagnosis for the infant it with whom I worked took months to 
confirm. So easy answers aren't always available.  The prognosis the 
local infant is extremely poor but due to incredible care by a very 
young mom who already had a preschooler and who ended up adopting her 
sister's two year old, the boy is doing better than should have been 
expected (ie he has lived to 5). Yes there are some amazing women and 
families among us. Never underestimate the determination of a teenager!
