FNP is the route I am going to go as well, and I will probably add PNP to
that at some point in addition to the IBCLC and the RNC in neonatal that I
plan to take next year....

The reason I wanted to go FNP instead of WHNP or NNP is for the same reason
Jan mentiond - to be able to see the diad (or triad as the case may
occasionally be!) as a whole and see/treat on both fronts if needed without
having to refer to two separate providers. If I was to go the WHNP route, I
might be less confident or even overstepping in my ability to see the baby
half, and if I was to go PNP, then that could limit what I might be able to
do for the mother. I know as a mom I was particularly frustrated that I was
told to see my ped when "I" was the one with the urinary tract infection and
then the ped sent me back to the OB who sent me to a family med doc, This is
the sort of situation I would like to help families avoid. 

FNP is a good broad background, and I believe that it will allow me the
opportunity to branch in a number of directions if I desire without the
limitations of particular specialty that might be present were I to take
another route.
