The first thing that comes to my mind is "Why?". I like the response
that suggested to gently point out the advantages of a little longer
space between children. Was she close in age to a sibling and had a
great relationship with that sibling? It doesn't always work out this
way - in some cases they are always "rivals". The possibility that
concerns me is whether it is her husband (or whatever) that's pushing
for her to get pregnant right away. Some men (in some cases encouraged
by thier peers/culture) believe that their manhood is proved by how many
children they can father. Others may buy into the old "keep 'em
barefoot and pregnant to keep them from straying" philosophy. In these
cases I would worry about other issues unrelated to breastfeding the
primary one being the potential for abuse of the mom and/or the children
(which is a higher risk with these attitudes than in the population in
general).
Dealing with these issues is, of course, beyond the scope of LC work
(unless the LC also happens to have credentials in Social Work or
related field), but we do need to be alert for abuse and report where
legally required or at least be able to refer the mom to other
resoureces if this is the case.
Hopefully, this is just a mom who loves having babies so much she just
can't wait for another one, but I do see it as a "yellow light".
Winnie
