Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd has left massive flooding in eastern NC. There
were over 2000 people rescued off rooftops today, thousands are homeless and
in shelters. 1 million people are without electricity. I am lucky that the
flood waters are still 2 miles away but my town is almost surrounded by water
so we can't get out or in but for a radius of a few miles except for one
road. I volunteered at the shelter tonight and because supplies are so low
there was only 6 cans of ABM for the 4 babies there. And all of it was
expired and the 6 cans were one can of each type including the special ABM.
The volunteers didn't know what to do for these babies because the Red Cross
had only delivered a box of PB & J sandwiches at 3 PM today. They didn't know
whether to give the formula or not being expired, and I couldn't say whether
or not it was safe. But the babies were 6-8 months old so I think I would be
more inclined to give cow's milk. Except there is no milk in town.
The county then lost electricity to over 75% of the population -again I am
lucky because my small town has a separate electrical substation. I called
the TV station and asked if they would be interested in doing a story on
emergency relaction and they said YES! So tomorrow I have to do a 3 min
story. What tips would you suggest I do?
Please include this area in your thoughts and prayers. Most of these people
had to leave behind everything when they were rescued because the water rose
so fast. There are almost no roads passable east of I 95.
