Some ideas that I have done in the past are :
1. Donate a copy of a breastfeeding book to the community library. See if
the newspaper will do a picture of the donation.
2. Send a copy of the press release to local news avenues and attach a
handwrittten note ofering to do a interview.
3. Bake chocolate chip cookies ( or ask LLL or support group moms to bake
for you) and deliver plates of cookies to MD offices with notes attached
that reads "cookies and milk are good but not as good as "mommy milk " for
babies!
4. Write a letter and send to the Family Living teacher at the local high
school volunteering to come in this year and teach a class on the benefits of
bfing.
5. Sponsor a contest. Develop a fill-in the blank questionaire and have
nurses answer the questions and return for a pen or memo pad. Make it
short-about 10 questions and be sure the last question is " Where can moms be
referred for breastfeeding support and help in our community?."
6. Set up a display board near the hospital cafeteria.
7. Write an article about the benefits of bfing for any and all newsletters:
the hospital employee newsletter, the Chamber of Commerce newsletter, the
Business and Professional Womens Newsletter, The State employees Association
Newsletter, etc. You can see alot of newsletter at the local library so get
the addresses and mail out your news.
8. Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper about some current news
event. Like the national legislation, or the Discover magazine article.
9. Write a letter to the Day Care Association offering to speak to their
meeting on the topic of "Caring for BF babies in your Center".
10. Write a thank you note to the person who helped you nurse your babies.
11. Get the mayor to sign an official proclaimation of World Breastfeeding
Week in your town. This takes over a month so do this now. The office of
the mayor has blank form so you just fill in the blanks.
12. Go to the shopping mall and ask the site manager to walk around with you
and see where bfing moms can comfortably take a bfing break.
