I have had one baby with a palate cleft as you describe plus a unilateral
cleft lip who was very gung-ho about nursing, and mom had flexible breasts.
She nursed well with an SNS behind a nipple shield for about 3 weeks, then
mom's supply started to decrease from excessive to just enough, even with
pumping, and baby needed some bottles to get enough.

SO---I would recommend your mom do some "insurance" pumping to get at least
a "supply and a half" going now, and watch for decreased intake by the baby
if mom's supply decreases.
