Dear Lactnetters,

This is my second question.

We were called to Peds about a 1 week old baby who had been admitted with a
blood glucose of 10.

When I spoke with the mom, she said baby had nursed okay in the hospital (not
ours) and she had not received any specific breastfeeding instruction. Once
she got home, baby wouldn't wake to feed and went 48 hours with no intake.

On admission, baby had glucose of 10 and had lost 15% of birthweight. Even
on IV fluids, baby's glucose only came up to 30's. Endocrinologist was here
and said baby was very lethargic and scrawny.

Mom says baby nursing okay now ( nursing 30 minutes -1 hour, swallows heard,
breasts softening, voiding ~6/ day, stooling ~4 yellow seedy stools/day).

Baby is edematous, nurses unable to place IV. Endocrinologist did blood
test, glucose 22. Gave D25W 2.5cc, glucose increased to 26. Gave 5cc D25W,
glucose increased to 32. She then drew glucagon, insulin, and growth hormone
levels.

This sounds like more than just breastfeeding mismanagement.

Has anyone heard of this before? TIA
