I will try to keep this breastfeeding related. :-)

There is a HUGE confounder that is not being accounted for in the
studies of vag vs. CS births: the vaginal births are virtually all
NON-natural, ie, they involve any number of interventions from a very
long list. In the care of a respectful and skilled midwife, and in a
supportive environment, few of these interventions would occur.

It is my belief and bias that if truly natural births were compared
with these interventive vag births as well as CS births, we would see
a very different story regarding later urinary incontinence and other
outcomes.

As a woman who has twice experienced what Michel Odent calls the
"fetus ejection reflex" I firmly believe that natural vaginal birth
need not be damaging to the perineal floor.

Breastfeeding initiation is much more likely to be compromised when
the mother and baby need to recover from an instrumental delivery and
clear medications out of their systems. In contrast, the
hormone-driven dance that occurs in mothers and babies during and
after natural birth is amazing, profoundly moving, and very effective
at getting breastfeeding off to a good start.

Dr. David Walters, quoted in the article as saying that vaginal birth
has been put out of business, reminds me of what used to be said
about infant formula being better than breastfeeding. I look forward
to the pendulum swinging back toward respect for the natural
processes.
