Thank you for a long and informative post, on young child nutrition.
Perhaps you can help me? I have a lovely client who is seriously
considering weaning her 12 month old daughter. The baby appears to be
sensitive to bovine proteins (colic when younger, comes out in a rash round
her mouth within minutes if she eats butter, dislikes milk and other dairy
products, which fortunately the mother has not forced). The obvious answer
would be to meet the baby's calcium requirements by continuing to
breastfeed, but mother seems determined to stop: she wants to know what is
the daily calcium requirement for a weaned child of this age, and how to
best provide it.

I have copies of all sorts of lovely WHO publications on feeding the young
child, and there is a lot of info on iron, zinc, vits A and C, and the dire
consequences of deficiencies of these micronutrients and minerals, but *very
little* on calcium. Perhaps it is not seen as a problem? Any suggestions??

Thanks if you can help, and any comments from anyone else always welcome.
