A father just called to tell me that his wife's thawed EBM suddenly( been storing milk since December) has a "rancid " smell. I assumed it was the lipase but did a little research   and   was reading  in Breastfeeding Answers Made Simple  that it might be : oxidation.
It talks about polyunsaturated fats in diet, and iron and copper in the drinking water- as contributors to the  oxidation.

 After speaking to him again  I was told that  his wife  is taking "fish oil supplements", iron supplements and prenatal vitamins . Also,she  has recently changed her source of drinking  water supply( a different brand of bottled water). She's also been eating salmon once or twice   per week.( does that have polyunsaturated fats?)
very interesting.....

The book suggests anti oxidants ( vitamin E, beta carotene),  temporary change of drinking water and avoidance of fish oil  and flaxseed  supplements and foods with rancid fats like anchovies.
 
Has anyone else read further about lipase vs. oxidation causing a change in the mother's milk?
