Hi Lactnetters,

I just have to share a fairly unusual home visit I did today with a mother
whose 6 day old wouldn't latch on. She had flat nipples so I began by asking
her to gently pull them out and this worked quite nicely. Husband was present
and he said "maybe if I suck on them it would help". Not missing a beat, I
told him it certainly might, never dreaming that he would get down to
business right away. Problem was, he took rather a long time, and it was only
when I finally said "Let's try the baby now" (baby was crying) that he came
up for air.

Later on he compared the problem of everting the nipple to the difficulty
some males have with erections !? I let that one slip by. The mother had no
reaction to any of this - I would have expected her to be mortified - but she
took it in stride. He wanted to *help* her again later, but I suggested she
learn to do it herself, since he might not always be around.

I chuckled all the way home.
