I would think that pacifiers might help avoid SIDS in babies by providing some amount of stimulation and feedback from the environment, which can be important for a baby who is sleeping alone. It is an another example of an artificial situation helping to make up for the effect of another artificial situation, of having babies sleep in an area totally devoid of human contact. Mother Nature certainly never intended for babies to be alone in cribs, in separate bedrooms!
