Maybe I'm being dense, but I don't see why you really need much more
than this. Normal feeding is exclusive breastfeeding. Anyone
recommending an deviation from the norm needs to support that with hard
data; we already have the hard data in favour of the norm (WHO, AAP
etc). The recommendations don't say "exclusive breastfeeding for six
months, unless the baby is smaller or larger or fussier or quieter than
average", they says "Exclusive breastfeeding for six months". Full
stop.

Oh, I totally agree. This is one of those situations in which it is hard to
prove a negative thru research, and I think the doc ought to provide the
research that proves that starting solids early is in the best interest of this
baby. I just wondered if anyone had any research r/t to this sort of
situation on EITHER side of the fence. I don't. I'm trying to figure out why this
doc thinks that starting solids will slow weight gain -- generally they want
to start solids when weight gain is low.

REminds me of the docs that tell the mothers that breastfeeding won't
protect against pregnancy, but then tell them they have to stop breastfeeding in
order to get pregnant because they won't otherwise!!!

How crazymaking is that?
