I had a similar situation with my second child. The LC determined he needed
"suck training" (he was five/seven days old at the time), that he was balling
up his tongue in the back of his throat when he was sucking. My right nipple
worsened; left was sore. Did suck training help? It was a very frustrating
time for all of us. I found it very difficult to do accurately and
eventually gave up on it; pumped and repeated put him to breast. When it
hurt or I felt like he was "bunching" his tongue, I took him off and switched
to other breast (left) and so on. Latch was extremely important through all
of this. He is now 14months and nurses just fine. Hope that helps!
