My brother is an anaesthetist, in fact he is an intensivist, and one of the
most highly qualifed in his field in the eastern states of Australia. When
I was pregnant with my first child in 1981, I read a book which suggested
that epidurals were every woman's right, and that by denying them to us, the
malew medical profession was involved in some sort of anti-feminist plot. I
asked my brother (an epidural expert) about this and he said; "An epidural
is no picnic. It is something that should never be considered routine or
undertaken lightly". Needless to say, I found myself a non-interventionist
doctor for my births.
