I too live in the Chicagoland area -- in the Western suburbs -- and here the
usual discharge time is 48 hours (72-96 for a C/Section). In the past year,
I've had maybe one or possibly two mothers go home in 24 hours (by choice,
not required). While I still see a lot of problems, they are much less than
they were when moms were forced out of the hospital in 24 hours. And one of
the biggest bonuses at our facility is that we have a terrific home visit
program where all the mothers receive a home visit from one of our nurses
within 3 to 4 days of discharge. Visit to the pediatrician then is usually
at 10 to 14 days.

But I agree w/ Denise that most of our problems in breastfeeding are caused
by the interventions perpetrated on the moms in labor & delivery....and then
circumcisions done before those little boys can figure out what a breast is
for....and waaay too many glucoscans with formula as the feeding of choice
for anything that hovers around 40. (Which means 42 or 43 or 45....)

BUT!!! I saw a mom today -- twins -- (babies 3 & 4). She delivered vaginally
-- gasp!!! -- and the second twin was BREECH !!! -- double gasp!! AND -- she
didn't have an episiotomy!!!! Congratulations to a certain (male) OB who was
willing to push the envelope this far.
