Christie, thanks for sharing your personal experience with s2s and bfdg.
Can we see it as an illustration that if babies are s2s we can trust them? Since mom is providing the warmth and the breathing reminders and the emotional security, baby has energy to bfd as needed?

Are all bets off once baby is swaddled and moved to a bassinette?

Perhaps that's where the concern about spending more calories than are available originated since baby is so stressed by the separation.

Who also hears staff say not to bfd beyond 30 min due to loss of calories and it's her co-IBCLCs who are saying it. (But none of the moms in question are doing s2s.)

Subject: Re: NOT breastfeeding a preemie longer than 30 minutes due to loss of calories??

Personal experience.

I dealt with this while my third was in the NICU. They had him on a 4 hour
feeding schedule, at the breast or with expressed breastmilk if I was not there.

After about 10 days, he was not gaining very well and was having a lot of
issues maintaining his temp. He was born at 34 weeks and was 4 lbs 5 ounces
by then.

I went in, with my sling and wore him skin to skin all day. I nursed him
whenever he acted hungry which just so happened to be every hour, on the
hour. This was very much against the nurses wishes. They said that he
would burn too much energy (he also had a cleft) and would just loose
weight. Well, he ended up gaining a bunch and came home 3 days later. :)
