Dear all:

Since there are the occasional posts on Lactnet about donating to breastfeeding friendly
causes and there are slightly more frequent postings about the harm caused in emergency
conditions when there is a call for "donated artificial milk" because of the misguided notion
that moms can't breastfeed in emergencies and even the call for "donated human milk from
developed countries" when locally available human milk could be made available at lower
cost I thought I'd post a link to a document I found on the listserve for US-based
nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work internationally in child survival programs.
I have never heard of the particular NGO that posted this module, but it had some good
references. I think it should be basic reading for anyone that wants to donate to a
community development project anywhere, not just developing countries.

The title is: "The significant harm of worst practices" and really captures why some well-
intended efforts can sometimes do more harm than good.
