Dear All,

I will do a search of the archives but I wondered if any of you very wise
practitioners could advise and inform me of protocol in your hospital NICU
regarding a mother being sick and supplying milk for her babies (in this
case 35 week twins who have been breastfeeding fairly well whenever mom is
present to do so.) Would love to hear from any pediatricians and
neonatologists. The situation is as follows, mom pumping and supplying enough
breastmilk for both babies and breastfeeding when present. Mom developed low
grade fever and contacted Neonatoligist who advised not to breastfeed until
fever passes. Mom has no symptoms other than slight temp in the evening which
I attribute to being one week postpartum. No breast issues involved either.
Father contacted me separately and I advised that there was no reason to pump
and dump which is what I advise all mothers as we all know when we deal with
mastitis. I have worked with many, many moms dealing with mastitis and none
have ever pumped and dumped whilst there babies were in the NICU. Is there
anything I am missing or should know otherwise? Incidentally these parents
have done a lot of reading and searched the Internet and cannot find anything
that would suggest they stop breastfeeding until the fever goes down and are
rather upset that they have been denied giving breastmilk to their babies. I
would love to hear from anyone especially if anyone is aware of any good
literature that I can download to present to the Neonatoligists on Monday. I
want to do a good job!

Thanks In Advance.
Elaine Robertson IBCLC
