I personally have 3 patients who are breastfed and were cows milk protein
allergic. There are confirmed cases and a few others I was suspicious of but
not proven.
The 3 confirmed cases were two who hived when given formula and had positive
RAST tests and the other had bloody stools, positive RAST and inflamation on
colon biopsy.
All breastfed well. Two of the babies did well breastfeeding. Two breastfed
well regardless of whether mom consumed cows milk protein the other baby mom
had to stop eating cows milk protein or the baby bled.
Point being that cow's milk allergic babys can breastfed, mom may or may not
what to change her diet.
Probably best to have mom eliminate cows milk protein from her diet to avoid
the risk of a severe, anaphylactic reaction.
BTW about 40-50% of cows milk allergic babies will be soy allergic too.
