I (my lactation staff) have been admonished by hn of maternal-fetal special care to NOT bug "sick" moms to pump for their NICU babies. They contend that pumping will cause the mother to a. Seize b. hemorrhage or c. Some other disaster. I have not found any evidence of this. Does anyone know of any study that shows deleterious effects to mom of early pumping (either family or nurse-assisted)? I just think it's another avoiding the breasts thing.
