Television actress Jane Syemour is UNICEF's new spokesperson. She is also
the subject of a widely viewed (in the US) television commercial for
Clairol brand haircolor. In the commercial, she is depicted as a very busy
woman....so busy that she is shown in one segment talking on the phone
while she bottlefeeds her real life twins.

I understand that Ms. Seymour has been a vocal supporter of breastfeeding.
However, the commercial in which she appears is a clear violation of the
WHO Code. It gives American women the impression that:
1.)Busy women bottlefeed
2.)Glamorous women bottlefeed
3.)It is not possible to breastfeed twins
4.)Jane Seymour may SAY that she's for breastfeeding, but when it comes
right down to it, all women
 bottlefeed.

Perhaps it is expressed breastmilk in the bottles. However, that certainly
is not the assumption that most viewers will make. Additionally, why would
a woman bottlefeed EBF to her own babies when she is right there with
them?

The babies in the ad are young infants, probably under eight months of
age.

Clairol is owned by Bristol-Myers-Squibb, also owners of Mead Johnson.Get
it?

It is entirely inappropriate for UNICEF's spokesperson to associate
herself with bottlefeeding in this way. I have written UNICEF demanding an
explanation. I hope that others will as well, particularly those with
"credentials". The e-mail address is:
