I never noticed growth spurts with either of my kids, but I'm a firm
believer in using them anyway.

"Growth spurts" can be said to occur any time a mother needs protection
against criticism for how often the baby nurses. "He sure is having a
growth spurt right now, isn't he?" Same way teething works for public
fussiness. "Poor baby, he's teething these days." The terms are so well
accepted that relatives and other critics tend to back right off :-)
