Kim, Katherine and others who have alerted us to the Vitamin D links:

Thank you sending the link to Gillie's Vitamin D research. It is a
fascinating read. The risks of vitamin D insufficiency sound almost
like the risks of formula feeding. One conclusion one might get from
this study is. like breastfeeding, it may be best not to fool around
with Mother Nature. Go outdoors, forget the sunscreen and enjoy
yourself. Sunshine is absolutely necessary for well-being.

Almost everyone is convinced sunscreen will prevent skin cancers
(Gillie's research doesn't support this) and that it "has" to be used.
My own grandchildren are slathered with sunscreen every time they go
outside. Do you think the sunscreen manufacturers have anything to do
with it?

All the old baby care books (early to mid 20th century) recommend
taking baby for a stroll in the sun every day. These days that's
pretty much a lost pleasure that is indeed healthy for the baby AND the
mother.
