Hello all,
I have permission to post. A mom called yesterday with a 3 month old baby.
She breastfed her first child 15 months. No problems. The first child was
diagnosed with hypersensitive skin and the mother has excema.

Baby was born by c-section. Mom had antibiotics at the time. Had a serious
sinus infection and mom had a lot more antibiotics. About a week later baby
had "fudgy" diahreeha, yeast on bottom, bad and baby has had white tongue,
clicking while nursing and now has a rash on her ENTIRE body that looks
horrible. She is scratching, crying and miserable.

Mom feels HORRIBLE like her milk is the cause of torture for this baby. The
doctor has said the baby is having an autoimmune response to the yeast.

Mom is now dairy free (only for a week or so). Is doing all the usual yeast
treatments. She has done nystatin, lotrimin on baby's bottom and they have
both had the normal courses of anti-yeast drugs. Mom is very well informed
and we spent a lot of time discussing the thrush treatment options listed in
the Breastfeeding Answer Book. Mom says most of the soreness on the nipples
is gone, but she feels it may now be in her ducts. Baby is nursing well, but
still has what mom classifies as diahrea and she is still having nipple pain
however she is most worried about her baby.

Her main concern is the WHOLE body rash her baby now has. Is this dangerous?
A sign that something drastic should be done? She wasn't sure if she should
wean (I didn't think so) or what could be done. I have dealt with yeast
before but was unsure of the all-over body rash thing.

I suggested that the baby might be allergic to disposable diapers and to
consider cloth. I suggested natural skin care products given the family
history too.

Thanks for any insight.
