While I agree that the ability to slow the flow is beneficial for many
breastbabies who need to feed from a bottle, I have very grave concerns
about using items such as the Haberman for this process. First of all,
their expensive. Secondly, if someone does not know how to use a Haberman
or uses it incorrectly the flow to the baby can be extremely intense- the
exact opposite of what your goal was. If the infant is being fed
incorrectly to begin with at the day care with a regualr nipple to get them
fed faster, why would you chose a Haberman to prevent this?
When my moms prepare to return to work I ask them to have their child care
provider describe how the bottle feed a baby. Optimally what they should be
looking for is the following (IMHO)
1) Caregiver feeds baby in an upright position
2) Caregiver allows infant to draw nipple into mouth
3) Caregiver allows infant to obtain 2-4 strong suckles
4) caregiver withdraws nipple from mouth and permits a "pause"
5) Steps are repeated.
I tell my moms the pause is kind of like what their mothers always
said, "chew your food twenty times" and prevents the baby from being forced
by the negitive pressure within the bottle to "gulp" a feeding- bad for
their tummies. When mom's talk to me later they say that not only does the
baby have less tummy upset after daycare days but when taught to slow the
feedings down and pause, the kids take a volumn more relevent to what their
normal intake should be and closer to what mom normall pumps during the
seperation.
 Just my thought....
