All once again thanks for the wonderfel advice the mother appreciated it.
She has written her whole story down for me and I am going to post it again
to see if any other light bulbs turn on. I have given her the information
for Jans magical fix and for Jack Newmans APNO, have suggested using that
if her Dr is ok with it. I am concerned about her mention of scabs, so once
again here is the story in full let me know if there is any additional
things I can suggest. I also suggested that she be checked for possible
breast cancer as I am in the better safe then sorry thought.

"Thanks for your help. Here is my history. It is rather long. Sorry.

I'm just wondering why the funny discharge from my right breast. I'm
wondering if I am really "all better" as my OB seems to think... or better
enough that i don't need further treatment. I'm wondering when i can nurse
Alex from the infected breast. I'm wondering how long it takes to get rid
of yeast infection.

I'm also really worried about having a repeat bout with the mastitis.

Anyway....

Take care, Kari

History of my bout with Mastitis

January 9, 2003 - Alex was born 2 weeks early - c-section due to breech
position

Tried to nurse Alex, but he had difficulty maintaining a latch due
to "short" tongue (not tongue tied) and different shape of his palate
(tall and thin) and due to my breasts being so large. Continued to attempt
to nurse and pumped 8 times/day.

January 13th - Discharged from hospital.

January 14th - developed staph infection in my incision site -was given
dicloxycilin.

Then had an allergic reaction to meds - switched to Keflex

Sunday, January 26th - Developed fever and chills and had lump in my left
breast. Slept for 24 hours. Fever was up to 103/104. Called OB on call
bc was worried might be my staph infection.

Monday, January 27th - went to my OB who said I had the flu… my staph
infection was fine, and that I didn’t have mastitis.

Tuesday, January 28th - Felt somewhat better. Felt great by evening.

Tuesday night - became very ill. High fever - 104 - chills, flu symptoms..
couldn’t get out of bed.

When I pumped I was getting green/yellow gunk out of my right breast.. as
well blood. I could pump about ¼ to ½ ounce of blood out of my breast. I
would empty the container and then start pumping again after cleaning it
out. This also happened a couple of times the previous week.

Wed, January 29th - Called my OB who said I should call my GP. Called my
GP and went in to see him. I was so sick I couldn’t walk - had to go in
wheel chair. They thought I had mastitis (right breast was sore) that had
turned to septicemia. He did blood work, an then gave me 2 injections of
an antibiotic - can’t remember the name. He told me to come back the next
two days for more injections and then follow up with my OB.

Thurs, January 30th - Another 2 injections of antibiotics. Still feeling
very poorly, but fever down lower. Right breast was more and more inflamed
and painful.

Friday, January 31st - Went to my OB and they said I had severe mastitis
and wanted me to go home on oral dicloxycilin. Another OB came and looked
and said I needed hospitalized, thank goodness. I had fever and chills,
and my right breast was at least twice the size of my other breast (I mean
this literally), and rock hard and red. I was in an incredible amount of
pain.

Jan 31st-February 3rd I was on Naficilin IV antibiotics. During this time
my breast got more and more swollen and red and painful. I was taking
tylox and morphine for the pain and continued to try to pump. Feb 2nd the
milk
(if that is what it was) in my right breast dried up altogehter.

Sunday Feb 2nd they did an ultrasound to rule out an abcess, and the u/s
showed that there was NO abcess.

Monday, Feb 3rd my OB consulted with an infectious disease doctor. They
thought I might have MRSA bug and isolated me in my room. They took
cultures from my nose, armpits, crotch, etc - but none from my breast as I
wasn’t able to produce even a drop of milk. The test later came back that
I did not have MRSA. They then switched my IV antibiotic to vancomycin.

Tuesday, Feb 4th they consulted with a lactation specialist at another
hospital and thought I might also have a yeast infection so they started me
on 200 mg/day of diflucan, as well as a topical cream with three different
meds in it.

Wednesday, Feb 5th - the swelling finally started to decrease - though only
minimally. They decided to send me home the next day on IV vancomycin and
they put in a PICC line to administer the meds.

Thursday, Feb 6th - released from the hospital in the late evening.

Friday, Feb 7th through today (Feb 19th) - home on IV antibiotics twice a
day - 1700mg vancomycin, as well as the 200 mg/day of diflucan.

Shortly after I got home from the hospital my left breast started to become
painful in the nipple - sharp pain from nipple into the breast. I saw a
lactation specialist the next day who said I had a bad case of thrush.

Current Status: Both breasts continue to be sore - the nipples are very
sensitive and sore and have white/yellow/green scabs on them - I was told
this is yeast. The left breast produces plenty of milk - enough to feed
Alex almost exclusively (about 25 ounces/day). The right breast produces
little to no milk. And it often is a bloody discharge or is yellow/green
discharge. The swelling in the right breast has almost completely gone
away except for an area about ½ surrounding the nipple."
