my grandmother was born in 1922 along with her two sisters (yes, triplets.
full term even. farm livin' be good for big babies and healthy life).
They lived in VERY rural Nebraska USA (yes, I guess technically all of
Nebraska is rural, but this was at least 150 miles from a town of more than
5,000).

As per the norm, babies were breastfed until the could do cups on their
own, without assistance, which generally coincided with walking, and they
were breastfed through winter to protect from illness. Weaning was
supposed to commence in April when everyone could go out and play and
distract from nursing.

She and her two other sisters were also wet nursed by their eldest two
sisters who had babies a few months older. My grandmother and her sisters
were the last babies, #9,10 and 11.

For the record, in my extended farming family formula feeding by choice is
looked upon with revulsion. Yuck we feed that to the pigs and cows, not us
is the attitude. "Poor kid" is the comment for the few of us who had to
use ABM.
