Washington Post 4 March 1997, Health section:

Pregnant women who have questions about prenatal care can ......... call a
toll-free telephone service started by the US Dept of Health and Human
Services. The service, part of the depts Healthy Start program is aimed at
further reducing infant mortality and low birth weights which have declined
in recent years. Still, one-fifth of American women receive no prenatal care
during the critical first trimester, according to HHS. The number for
expectant parents to call for information and referrals is 800-311-2229
(800-311-BABY) Spanish 800-504-7081.

Me now; Apparently this central number puts you automatically through to your
area HHS dept. You may want to try this number in your area and see if it
works before giving it out to expectant moms.
I called this number today. They seem to have the lowdown on who to call for
what service where, ...a central control center to assist expectant mothers
in need, to negotiate the government services maze. The person I talked to
here in Northern Virginia, had a referral phone number at her fingertips for
everything I asked about, except breastfeeding. So I gave her LLL #. She/they
are interested in other resources/referral sources for lactation support, low
or no cost for their population. Any other ideas?
