One of my moms also fell asleep while boiling parts and the fire department
came.  They were instructed to leave the house for at least 3 hours for the
air to clear, of course that meant leaving their home with all the windows
open and no one in attendance.  So they finished out the night at a friend's
home.
    I discussed with a Medela sales manager,  many years ago, about using a
microwave to sanitize the parts and they agreed that it would also be
effective.
    Wash with hot soapy water and rinse
    Place shield, membrane, and valve head (the yellow piece) in a microwave
vegetable steamer on the rack that comes inside the steamer (usually moms
already have one or can buy one for around $7).  Put 1/2 cup of water in the
steamer, cover, and microwave on high for 5 minutes.  Don't put in the
tubing, it will melt.
    Moms that have bottle steamers could use that instead.
