Renee asked, <<I am posting this because I am trying to
gather info from other private practice LC's like myself who have mentored. It
is a tim-consuming proposition and I want to be fair to the intern and
myself in
terms of compensation. Any thoughts out there? All information I could find
so far was from clinics and/or hospital settings and they charge at least 5000
dollars for the 500 hours which usually can be completed in 2 years.>>

Renee, I am glad you asked this question as I am currently wrestling with
the same topic. I have been approached by a candidate about this and am
considering taking her on, but first I need wisdom and advice from those who
have done this, especially on what would constitute a reasonable fee.

I've only just started looking into the requirements. It does seem to be a
very thorough and time-consuming proposition. This summer will mark my 13th
year since IBCLC certification (and 20th in breastfeeding overall) and in
that time I have helped a number of people to prepare for the exam. All have
passed :-) This business of mentoring an IBCLC candidate is a lot more than
that but I do feel I have something to offer; 13 years in the trenches will
teach you a thing or two ;-). But like you, Renee, I have questions, and
feel intensely the need of advice from the wise ones out there who have done
this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answers to the Lactnet list are fine but so are emails to my personal
address if anyone prefers to discuss this off-list:
