Hi, Jean and Others: The Chicago Maternity Center, to which you are
referring, Jean, was a fantastic organization of nurses/midwives who
provided maternity care to Chicago's indigent women. They provided
prenatal care, delivered babies, and provided post-partum care, all in the
home! OB residents in Chicago hospitals were required to rotate thru this
service as part of their clinical training. It was a sad day when the
Center was forced to close its doors, due to lack of funding in the 1960s
or 1970's, I believe. Unfortunately, this service slightly predated my
schooling - I would have loved to have spent some time working there. I
would compare the Maternity Center to the Frontier Midwifery Program in
Kentucky, which (I hope it is still operational) provides home maternity
care in rural areas as opposed to home maternity care provided in inner
city urban areas. There is talk periodically about reviving such a
program, but so far, no luck.
