I have to agree with Dori's post about WIC. I have worked with WIC as a
peer counselor in Tarrant County, Fort Worth, Texas. The policy is to
counsel *every* client, whether PG or BF about the benefits of *BF*. We
called the PG moms weekly for the last 6 weeks of pregnancy to encouraging
them to choose BF over ABM. The BF moms were called at weekly, and we also
staffed a BF hotline 24/7 to answer any questions. It was always stressed
that the ABM vouchers were not going to last all month, but to BF was the
only sure way to have enough food for the baby. Also, really pushing the
fact that exculsively BF moms received larger food packages than those who
offer formula, or did not BF at all. Though it did not work with all
clients, it did help to change the minds of some. My point is
this.....there are going to be some who make the best decision, and some
that do not. In public health especially, you have to go with what will
work for the individual. Though BF is the absoulte best nourishment, for
some it is not an option. We need to be open minded about their decisions,
and agree to disagree the matter at hand.

Clear as mud.
