I've search the archives for purple nipples and Jean Cotterman describes the
nipple cyanosis I saw today while a mom pumped. The darkest color purple I
have ever seen and Montgomery glands were enlarged and reddened afterward.
One hour after pumping, nipples had some faint pink-purple tinge, like
bruising-this eventually went away. This pump was mashing and mushing the
nipple. It's not a pump I am used to.

This was the same pump mom has been using frequently for 5 weeks. Purple
color during pumping just started about a week ago. Nipples were pink after
baby came off. Latch was painless until baby started smacking with almost
every suck, completely tongue completely losing contact with the breast--then
the pain started, of course.
Baby did not smack on breast a week ago! Mom had NO pain related to pumping
until the last week when she started having symptoms of yeast: burning
nipples when baby came off, deep shooting pains throughout breasts, no nipple
cracks, no thrush visible in baby.....
My first dilemma has been getting someone who can prescribe (she is "between
doctors" and is new to the area) to see this mom's breasts as the Montgomery
glands were staying inflamed looking (I'm thinking a bacterial infection)
plus she has some yeast symptoms. A CNM-IBCLC diagnosed her over the phone
and called in Rx for Lotrimin cream for mom and Nystatin for baby's mouth. I
told her to mix some antibiotic cream with the Lotrimin. 24 hours after
starting treatment, the shooting pains are almost completely gone and nipples
are better but she is afraid of putting baby on without me there.Today, I see
the purple color with pumping and Mont glands look normal except after
pumping.
I have never seen or heard of this purple nipple color only with pumping when
a mom has yeast. I have been told by the breast pump company that purple
nipples with pumping is a sign of yeast.
My thoughts are that baby's noisy sucking is from invisible thrush and in a
day or two she can get rid of the pump.
Help!
