Dear Lactnetters:
Yesterday I encountered a "first"- the mom of a tiny 25 weeker (b. 1 week
ago) who is pumping at least 16 2 oz bottles each day and staying engorged.
She say milk still drips after each pumping session and she is very
uncomfortable. Her freezer is full, and the nicu has all the milk they
will take from her right now since her tiny 1 lb baby is not yet eating. I
gave her a copy of our hospital's protocol for cabbage for engorgement and
suggested she pump a little less often (she pumps only 5 times a day now)
and stand under a warm shower a couple of times a day and do gentle breast
massage to relieve some of the fullness. I hate to see all that good milk
go to waste, and the family lives in Europe and plans to return there when
the baby is able to travel (or at the end of the year); they'll never be
able to use up all the milk in that time, and cannot take it with them.
They say they would be willing to donate the milk if someone else can use
it. Does anyone know how to contact a milk bank, and if there are special
procedures to follow for collecting milk for banking? This milk is in 2 oz
volutrols capped with red teats. We are in VA. Do you have further
suggestions for decreasing her supply? Thanks!
Anne
