Does anyone have any information on Antibuse (a alcohol-abuse deterrent) or
Disulfiram (generic) and breastfeeding? I have a mom who is currently
breastfeeding her six week old infant and has been ordered by the court to
take Antabuse in order to keep custody of her infant. She will also be
required to have bi-weekly urine checks to make sure she's taking the drug.
I have looked in Hale and the USPDI 96 and have only found that "problems
in humans have not been documented". The doctor is of course suggesting
weaning. The baby has only been allowed to see the mother 4 hours a day for
the last six weeks and he nurses beautifully. She pumps the remainder of
the day and must discard the milk - the case worker won't allow her to give
the foster caregiver her pumped milk. The mother has been sober during her
entire pregnancy and is determined to remain so. Breastfeeding is very
important to her and I believe it is what keeps her hanging on - and she's
willing to do whatever it takes to get her baby back. Thanks for any
enlightenment you folks can offer.
