Has anyone else seen mothers lately (we had 4 this week) with edema of the
breast/nipple area? Baby can't latch because there is so much edema behind
the areola- it makes the nipples look like they are retracting. The mother's
hands and legs and feet are usually swollen also. Most mothers get at least
2 bags of IV drip in the hosipital which I think makes edema worse. If
babies are put to breast and suck vigorously mom gets very damaged nipples
because baby can't draw nipple back in mouth. I recommend heat, massage,
hand expression, Hoffman technique, maybe pump with electric pump, feed the
baby. then ice or cool compresses. Sometimes moms must do this for 48 to 72
hours or more; they get discouraged and want to give up. Anyone have a good
quick solution?
