I am catching up with lactnet after being away for awhile.  I have just
read this (below) from Naomi Bar-Yam.

I am both a volunteer with the Australian Breastfeeding Association and
an IBCLC in private practice.  In the last day I had a call from a
mother on our volunteer National Breastfeeding Helpline about use of
breastmilk substitutes/powdered infant formula.

I found that I had to correct her on how to prepare the breastmilk
substitute as the hospital had told her that she could make up 24 hours
worth and leave it in the fridge.  Since 2012/2013 Australia has had
guidelines that are similar to WHO guidelines.  Yet, this hospital,
which was one our first BFHI accredited hospitals, is now providing
incorrect information and not providing support for mothers who want to
breastfeed.

The mother originally wanted to know how much to "top-up" her baby and
if 60mls after a breastfeed for a 7 day old was okay.  We did discuss
the size of top-ups to encourage breastfeeding as well as the correct
way to make up powdered infant formula according to the Australian
National Health and Medical Research Infant Dietary Guidelines and the
WHO guidelines.

Ruth Berkowitz,

ABA breastfeeding counsellor & community educator; trainer & assessor,
BFHI assessor & educator; Grad Dip counselling; IBCLC
