Pamela reports
"By the way... I watched this baby spit up, it is the oddest thing,
he does
not even burp or make a sound, it just comes rolling out of his
mouth, even
when he was nursing once. It was almost like he overflowed, did not
stop
him from going right back to nursing. I thought of reflux but
this baby
never acts uncomfortable. He does not even cry out, just giggles
and smiles
as it all rolls out."

When mine were babies, a close friend had one that did this same
thing. He would always "give mom a refund" after nursing. She
tried cutting the nursings shorter to avoid this, but he would be
very unhappy. Let him decide when he was done and he would happily
give some back. She eventually decided it wasn't really a problem
and just made sure she had a diaper or such on hand to catch it.
Baby went on to become a healthy young man. I have come to the
conclusion that perhaps some of these babies neglect to swallow the
last mouthful. They end the "suck/swallow" cycle with a suck rather
than a swallow. I see this happening more with alternate feeding
methods, especially cup feeding. However, in the case I just
described, what came back was more than one swallow's worth.

I think it was Dr. Greg White who described most spitting up as "a
laundry problem, not a medical problem".
