Margery Wilson writes, in connection with the appearance of the AAP book on
BF together with formula gift packs at her workplace: "The rep said that
Ross will only provide this book to
us if we also give out the gift bag with formula samples."
This statement MUST be relayed back to the AAP by the hospital. The AAP are
responsible for the 'deal' on the book, and they need to take the
consequences. According to the AAP, their goal in letting Ross buy the book
was to supply mothers with first-rate BF information. It seems Ross has a
divergent understanding of the purpose. The AAP has an urgent need to
discuss with Ross just what the agreement was. If nothing else, they owe it
to their own members who are involved in supporting normal infant feeding.
If someone can get it in writing from Ross that a hospital receiving books
for free distribution to mothers is tied to a commitment from that hospital
to undermine BF by the distribution of free formula samples to the same
mothers, the AAP may be able to get out from under the whole deal. Wouldn't
that be nice?
