Linda Volkovitsch:

I am sorry to report that, despite the advanced state of the BFHI and
government support of BF here in Mexico, there are no existing Milk Banks.
In my city of Merida there are now 4 large hospitals with UNICEF BFHI
Certification...but none, not ever the huge tertiary level one, runs a milk
bank. Lack of funds, lack of space, lack of equipment....whatever.

Cancun is even less advanced medically, and less into BF support, so I
doubt there would even be a place for your Mom to donate her milk....plus
the HIV thing is as big a concern here as it is in the U.S. as far as
giving donor milk to another recipient goes.

One big question that I would suggest you check into is:

What are the U.S. Customs regulations re: Importing Breastmilk?
How can the mother prove it is her OWN milk?
What might she have to do to get permission to return to the U.S. with the milk?
Maybe there is not any problem, but after all, she will be crossing an
International Border, and the refrigeration aspect is the least of her
worries,
what with modern inventions. Just a few thoughts.

Please give her my telephones so she can give me a call while in Cancun. I
am only 4 hrs. away...and would love to at least give her warm support
while she is there.
