Nikki Lee suggested I post my method of hand expressing breastmilk to the
list.

Judy Ritchie

Hi Nikki,

I had a very forceful let down or MER, but was initially engorged as my #1
daughter was separated from me at birth for a few hours in the hospital and
was not interested when brought back to me. She really did not latch well
until day 10, the day I found LLL in a newspaper announcement of their
meetings. I was most grateful to find this local leader who talked me
through a proper pain-free latch on the phone.

In pregnancy my breasts grew from a minus padded 32A to 36DD with a 50#
weight gain and I am 5'2". According to my father, this was a pattern I got
from my mother also-including a very adequate supply as she pumped for
another mothers baby in post WWII Germany in a displaced persons camp where
I was born.

My LLL leader coached me through various attempts to soften the breasts
enough for my 6# daughter to latch. I found just putting one hand above and
one below and pushing my hands toward each other caused all the milk ducts
to spray. It was fascinating to see 8 or more streams going every which-way
into my glass bottles. Once I got good at it I got 4 ounces at each attempt
and kept putting bottles into the freezer. I never needed to use them,
though out of sentimentality I saved them for years.
