I have heard the same thing- that cutting Silicone nipple shields leaves a
sharp edge.  The 2 times in my practice that I have used one, I used a soft
thin latex shield (made by Am--- Eg----).  Latex can be cut, but I did not
need to, we used it only to get the babies to latch once, then they went to
the breast without it.
