Dear Elisheva

The "formula" for how much milk a baby needs is - roughly, as you say -
150ml/kg/day - ie a 5 kg baby would need 5 x 150 ml = 750ml in 24 hours -
then divide by eight for (roughly) a "feed" every three hours, ie nearly
100ml for each three hours that mom is separated from her baby.

However, the paeds here usually say that a baby over 10 days of age can have
180ml/kg/day - so to be quite safe, I suggest that a 5 kg baby would need 5
x 180ml = 900ml in 24 hours. She may take the milk frequently, in small
amounts, or 8 large bottles of 110 ml each. However, I think mom could be
reassured that her baby would not totally starve if she left 180ml/kg/day.

Also nice to know is that if the baby receives EBM, she can drink some of
the bottle and the carer can put the half-finished, sucked bottle back in
the fridge, then warm it up and feed it to the baby any time in the next two
days. If the baby is receiving formula in mom's absence, this is not
possible, since the left-overs have to be discarded within an hour because
of bacterial contamination.

And for those of us who are purists, of course the EBM would be fed by
*cup*, not bottle!

Best ....

Pamela
