as I recall the glucose water was preferred to prevent
allergies by not introducing foreign proteins from formula. What would be
the harm for 24-48 hours if it helped entice the baby to take the breast?
Dear Friends:
What is going on with the clinical situation that a newborn would have to
thus enticed to do what all its reflexes are programming it to do? Better to
express a drop of colostrum after 10-15 minutes of s2s. Why model using some
other product, especially as when there is no evidence to show that it is safe
and harmless?
Once folks get the notion that it is alright to put things on nipples,
who knows where this can go. We've already heard of case studies where nurses
were putting grape jam on nipples to entice babies, and mothers were putting
steroid cream (when they ran out of the stuff in the purple tube that they got
in the hospital) or cocaine paste (to deal with sore nipples). I know these are
far out situations, and people will do anything! However, why teach mothers
to put things on their nipples? Why not leave the baby s2s and wait for the
baby to latch?
    warmly,
Nothing on nipples at the beginning, please.
